I nominate the Steve Landesberg character Arthur Deitrich. Many believe that he replaced Sgt Fish, but they served two seasons together.

Nurse Chapel was the hottie who kept the Original Star Trek cast in sick bay.
And Nia Peeples as Sydney Cooke kept Walker Texas Ranger on the air long after his karate choppin' high Kickin' battles got old.

Hello guys - what about M*A*S*H! Capt. B.J Hunnicutt & Maj. Charles Emerson Winchester III..... Both awesome additions! Talk about making a show better. Also Col. Sherman T. Potter was also added.

Mr. Big was not an add-on character. He was in the pilot episode and was a regular throughout the first season.

add on corrections
Gloria & Meathead were on All in the Family from the beginning. At some point the characters moved to California, but the show continued without them.

MASH, the first few episodes had more characters living in the swamp that disappeared before the end of the first season. Frank Burns was replaced by Winchester. Frank Burns went crazy & was transfered home. Henry Blake was sent home (2nd or 3rd season)& his plane crashed killing him. Col. Potter replaced him for the majority of the shows' run. Trapper John was also sent home (2nd or 3rd season)& replaced by BJ.

Reverend Jim was not in the original cast of "TAXI." I think he was added in the second season
