When Three Dog Night struck gold with "Joy to the World" in 1971, fans worldwide acclaimed their driving pop/rock sound and powerful harmonies. Today Three Dog Night delivers their signature sound to audiences spanning generations. The Three Dog Night line up features founding members Cory Wells and Danny Hutton on lead vocals as well as original keyboardist Jimmy Greenspoon and Michael Allsup (lead guitar).
Brought together originally in 1968 by Danny Hutton, the group was enormously successful right from the start. Hutton, had met Corey Wells while both of them were touring with Sonny and Cher. Danny met Chuck Negron through mutual friends.
The group had no hang-ups about 'doing only their own songs'. They recorded the best new material from the best new songwriters and wound up with fourteen gold albums, nine gold singles and sold over forty million units. Three Dog Night toured extensively during the seventies, breaking attendance records in venues ranging from concert halls to football stadiums. In 1975, however, the rigors of non-stop roadwork caught up with the group. "We became disenchanted," Wells says today. "We just quietly backed out of the picture.
Although each member needed to 'get away' from the hectic world of pop music, each began, eventually, to feel the need to return. As Danny Hutton puts it, "We just had a test rehearsal and discovered the old magic was still there" noted Danny. Audiences agree. Three Dog Night is now into its fourth decade on the road. Three Dog Night tours extensively, performing at fairs, corporate events, casinos, theatres and special events with symphony orchestras. Since 1986, they have performed over 1,600 shows including two Superbowls.
Three Dog Night's statistics are astonishing and virtually unmatched in popular music. The group had 21 consecutive Top 40 hits, 18 straight Top 20's, 11 Top 10's, 3 number 1's, 7 million-selling singles and 12 straight RIAA Certified Gold LPs. Three Dog Night's hits appeared on best selling charts in all genres (pop, rock and country).
The now-famous name came from a story about Australian aborigines who, on cold nights in the outback, sleep with their dogs for warmth. The coldest evenings are known as "three dog nights".
