AC: I'm speaking with Danyel Morgan, bass player for the Robert Randolph and the Family band at the Jones Beach Theatre, in which they just finished playing their set. How do you feel opening up for Eric Clapton, an icon in music history?
DM: It feels great. I have admired him for his guitar playing and have listened to him for a real long time. To open up for him is real exciting.
AC: How long have you been playing music?
DM: I was self taught since I was five years old.
AC: How long have you been in the Robert Randolph and the Family Band, and who are the members?
DM: I have been with them since 2000, and the members include Robert Randolph, lead vocals and guitar; Marcus Randolph, drums; Jason Crosby on the drums, and myself as vocals and bass player.
AC: What do you see as your role in the band?
DM: Well, I am the bass player, and we all see us as a family. There is no I in team [smiles]. We are a cohesive band who wants to get out there and play whereever and for whomever we can.
AC: With that in mind, where are you guys going to be playing in the future?
DM: We are about to head to Europe with Eric Clapton, playing England and Ireland, as well as the Jubilee Jam in Mississippi, and the Bonnaroo Festival in Tennessee are just some of the places that we will be.
AC: What message are you looking to send with your music?
DM: My message is to get the world some good, wholesome, all-around feeling by expressing through R & B and rock. I would love to be a producer, because I love working with and for people.
AC: Your music is definitely eclectic. Any collaborations/influences?
DM: Sure there is! Just tonight we played with Trey Anastasio from Phish. On our album "Colorblind" we have performances by Eric Clapton, Dave Matthews, and LeRoi Moore just to name a few. My influences are my dad and Stanley Clark. They are my number one idols.
AC: What piece of advice do you have for up and coming musicians?
DM: Follow your dreams and don't let anybody intervene with it.
AC: Rumor has it that you have a solo project in the works. Is it true?
DM:Yes it is. I do have a solo project, and the whole thing is all me, from playing the instruments to producing. The name of the album is "Music N Me"
AC: You said that you wanted to produce. If you could pick anybody to produce, who would it be?
DM: That is a good question [smiles]. Actually, that is a real tough question [laughs]. I think you have me stumped here. If I could pick anybody, it would have to be Mary J. Blige; U2; Sting; Busta Rhymes; Janet Jackson; Babyface... But my ultimate production would be Eric Clapton.
AC: We ask the really tough questions here at 102.3 WBAB.. Now for the hardest question of the night.. Do you sing in the shower?
DM: [laughs] WOW!! That is really hard!! The answer to that question is YES!! The steam filling the shower gets me going, and the singing keeps my vocals fresh and tight.
AC: Thank you for your time spending with us, WBAB's World's Greatest Street Team. You can check out Robert Randolph and the family band at MySpace keyword Robert Randolph and at Robertrandolph.net
DM: It has been a pleasure, and we hope to be back on the Island real soon.
