Reality TV star and former United Kingdom soccer player Ashley Cain confirmed via social media that his 8-month-old daughter, Azaylia, died Saturday, six months after she was diagnosed with a rare, aggressive cancer.
“Rest In Paradise Princess. I will always hold you in my heart until I can hold you again in heaven,” Cain wrote on Instagram on Sunday.
Azaylia was diagnosed with acute myelogenous leukemia, or AML, at eight weeks old, BBC News reported.
According to the American Cancer Society, AML accounts for only about 1% of all cancers.
Cain and his partner, Safiyya Vorajee, documented their daughter’s treatment for the rare cancer of the blood and bone marrow on Instagram.
“You are my Angel my heartbeat my soul, RIP my precious baby, you will always be with me like a handprint on my heart,” Vorajee, a specialized nurse known as an aesthetic practitioner, posted on the social media platform, BBC News reported.
In November, the couple urged people to register as stem cell donors after being told their daughter needed a transplant, leading to the registration of 41,000 donors within 48 hours. Doctors later determined that Azaylia’s successful bone marrow transplant would not prevent her death, the outlet reported.
Cain, who played for Coventry City, was featured on MTV reality competition shows, including “The Challenge” and “Ex on the Beach,” CNN reported.
Rest in paradise baby Azaylia. Too perfect for this earth that god wanted you for himself🤍
