A news release from the Michigan State Police said Hillsdale County deputies were sent to a residence in Reading Township on Wednesday at about 7:45 p.m., the Hillsdale Daily News reported.

Deputies had responded to a dog-at-large complaint, the newspaper reported. Upon arrival, one deputy with seven years of experience was attacked and bitten by the dog, MLive reported. The deputy then fired shots at the animal, killing it.

The dog’s owner, Oscar Herrera, 32, of Reading Township, was angry over the shooting and confronted the deputy armed with a knife, the website reported.

The deputy then shot Herrera, the Daily News reported. Herrera was pronounced dead at the scene.

“When the deputy made contact at the residence of the dog, the deputy was immediately attacked by the dog and bit,” state police said in a written statement. “The deputy fired shots at the dog, which resulted in killing the dog.”

The knife was recovered at the scene, according to the Michigan State Police.

The deputy, who is not being identified at this time, was taken to an area hospital and treated for dog bite injuries, MLive reported. He was placed on administrative leave pending an investigation.
