If you have dreams of going to the top of the world, then you need to save even more money as the cost of climbing Mount Everest is going up.

For those who want to climb Mount Everest the fee will be $15,000 during the peak season, up 36% from its $11,000 fee, the BBC reported.

If you climb outside of the peak season, it will still be a 36% increase. From September until November, it will cost $7,500 while the December to February period will be $3,750.

It will apply to the South East Ridge or South Col route. That is the same route used by Sir Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay in 1953, Reuters reported.

Last year, Nepal, which counts on the fees as revenue for the country, approved about 300 permits every year for climbers, but many people say that is too many people. The BBC reported it is not known if the higher fee will lower the amount of people trying to make the trek.

The director general of the Department of Tourism said the fee increase was overdue. It had been in place for nearly 10 years, Reuters reported.

“The royalty (permit fees) had not been reviewed for a long time,” Narayan Prasad Regmi told Reuters. “We have updated them now.”

He did not say how the funds would be used.

Mountaineer Kenton Cool said he doesn’t think it will dissuade foreign climbers.

“In the grand scheme of the cost to climb Everest it won’t impact most foreign climbers,” but he added, “Hopefully, the extra revenue will be put to good use.”

Cool has made the climb 18 times, the BBC said.

Mount Everest has the highest altitude at 29,029 feet above sea level, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
