CHAMPAIGN, Ill. — An Illinois police officer has died after being shot by a suspect while responding to a report of a domestic disturbance early Wednesday morning, according to the Champaign Police Department. The suspect, who was not identified, also died, according to police.
Authorities said the shooting happened as Officer Chris Oberheim, 44, and another unidentified officer responded to a report of a domestic disturbance in the 2400 block of North Neil Street. Officers encountered an armed person after getting out of their vehicles and a shootout ensued, officials said. The armed person, who was not identified, died at the scene, according to police.
Authorities transported the injured officers to a hospital, where one was last listed in stable condition. Oberheim, who joined the police department in September 2008, died of his injuries later Wednesday.
“A true professional and devoted public servant, Officer Oberheim is remembered for his heroism, bravery, and the oath of office he honorably upheld in his commitment to duty,” police Chief Anthony Cobb said Wednesday in a statement. “His only intention was to serve, protect and help provide care before he was senselessly fired upon and killed.”
Police did not share additional details about the incident that led to Wednesday’s shooting. The Illinois State Police are investigating the incident.
